Antes de que te des comienzo a tus estudios y a tu etapa como residente de España debes de llevar a cabo una serie de pasos más para poder, finalmente, vivir en el país sin preocupación alguna.

Congratulations, you have arrived at the place where your dream of studying abroad will come true! Now you can discover all the secrets that the Spanish streets have for you and start your life as a graduate student. But, before you begin your studies and your time as a resident of Spain, you must take a series of steps to finally be able to live in the country without any worries... At Glex we will explain you the step by step of your last steps!‍

There are two procedures that are of utmost importance for your stay in Spain: the registration and the TIE.

Empadronamiento

What is the empadronamiento?

This is a document that certifies that you reside within Spanish territory. All inhabitants of Spain, regardless of their nationality or legal status, must be registered. It is the document that accredits your status as a resident of a municipality in the country. All you need to process the registration form is to have a place of residence, it does not matter if it does not belong to you and you are only renting it. To learn more about this procedure, see the entry of our blog that is specially dedicated to this document. In it we explain you, exactly, the process, the documents, the place, etc. to process it.

TIE

What is TIE?

TIE stands for "Tarjeta de Identidad de extranjero" (Foreigner's Identity Card). This document is dedicated to accredit your LEGAL status as a foreigner in Spain. You should apply for this card if you will be studying in the country for a period longer than six months. In order to apply for it, you will need the following documents:

- Application for a Foreigner's Identity Card, printed and signed, in original and copy. You can obtain the application here.
- Proof of payment of the fee (proof that you have paid the fee required by the Spanish government for this procedure).
- Proof of affiliation or contracting insurance.
- Recent child-sized photograph (passport size), in color and white background. How do I apply for my TIE?

In the first instance, you must schedule an appointment for this procedure. You can make an appointment through this link. Once you arrive in Spain, you must go to the Immigration Office or the Police Station of the province where you are within the first month you are in the country. You will have to pay the corresponding fee, the amount of which may depend on the authorization documented on the card.

Such authorization may be one of the following:
- Form 012 - "Tarjeta que documententa la primera concesión de la autorización de residencia temporal, de estancia o de trabajadores (Card documenting the first granting of authorization for temporary residence, stay or workers).
- Form 012 - "Tarjeta que documententa la renovación o prórroga de la autorización de residencia temporal, prórroga de estancia o de trabajadores transfronterizos" (Card documenting the renewal or extension of the authorization for temporary residence, extension of stay or cross-border workers).
- Form 012 - "Tarjeta que documententa la autorización de residencia y trabajo por circunstancias excepcionales" (Card documenting residence and work authorization for exceptional circumstances).
- Form 012 - "Tarjeta que documententa la autorización de residencia de larga duración o residencia de larga duración-UE" (Card documenting authorization for long-term residence or long-term residence-EU):

*Note: In most cases, since they are students recently arrived in Spain, the first of these (Form 012) applies.

Consider that the TIE will be valid for the same period of time as the duration of your course. No one can do the paperwork for you, YOU must be the one to go to the Immigration Office or the Police Station.
