The CCSE is the exam of Constitutional and Sociocultural Knowledge of Spain and, by passing it, you demonstrate that you have sufficient knowledge of the Spanish Constitution as well as the current social and cultural panorama of the country, to be a Spanish citizen. This is elaborated by the Cervantes Institute and it is possible to take it in 10 exams during the year; the last Thursday of each month except August and December.

This test consists of 25 questions about Spanish government, culture, citizen participation, legislation, history and society. In order to pass it, it is necessary to have at least 15 correct answers. The certificate is valid for 4 years, so it should be renewed before the end of this period.

To register, applicants must access the official website of the Instituto Cervantes and create an account.

Once you have registered, paid the fee of 85 euros (which includes the exam fee, the issuance of the certificate, access to the preparation materials and the manual for taking the exam), it is time to take the test. There is a test preparation manual which includes all the questions that are likely to appear on your exam.

On the day of the test, which lasts 45 minutes, you will need to bring the following documents:‍

- Proof of registration (which the Instituto Cervantes sends to your email).
- Passport in original. ‍
- Valid TIE in original.

Within a maximum period of 20 days, the Instituto Cervantes issues the results to the applicants. These are divided into APTO (pass) or NO APTO (fail). If your case is the latter, it is possible to take the exam again three weeks after having taken it the first time. This second opportunity must be passed within a maximum period of 18 months after the first attempt.
