Surely this will be one of the main doubts you will have when you arrive in Spain; especially if you plan to study or work here for a while. In this article we will explain what they are and what they are for.

What is the DNI?

What is the NIE?

It is the identification number for foreigners; that is, for all citizens with a nationality other than Spanish. This number is a code used for the tax identification of foreigners in Spain. The NIE, is formed by an initial letter which is usually an X, Y or Z, this letter is followed by seven digits ending with a check digit.

What is the TIE?

TIE - (TARJETA DE IDENTIDAD DE EXTRANJERO)It is a card. It is the physical medium of your resident NIE. It is the card itself, the paper or cardboard on which your card is printed.
